Cybersecurity put simply, is the sum total of all the practices involved in protecting computers, computer based equipments, hardwares, softwares, electronic devices, systems, networks and data from cyberthreats, digital and malicious attacks and unauthorized access. This involves engaging such measures as might include the employment of simple techniques such as passwords, or more extensive methods such as the use of firewalls, anti-viruses, the use of VPN’s and intrusion detections in the prevention of cyberttacks, ranging from hacking, Denial-of-service, infection of viruses, phishing and other forms cybercrime and terrorism. The importance of cybersecurity grows with the adoption and reliance on computer and it’s technology in the daily, personal life, commercial and government activities because cyber attacks which can lead to the loss of data, information getting into unauthorized hands, financial theft, breaches and the compromise of systems and organization can be targeted towards any computer based system.
How Important Is Cybersecurity
It is very necessary for users to be cyber aware and to engage in cybersecurity due to the continuous increase in the adoption and reliance of computer technologies in the day to day affair. This cuts across all spheres of human life. Most of the activities engaged in utilizes one form of computerization or the other. Motor vehicles, mobile phones, smart watches, hospital equipments, production and industrial organizations, scientific bodies, governor bodies, financial and educational institutions, space agencies, broadcasting agencies, defense and policing agencies and other sectors of the economy all relies heavily on computer systems. These systems are interconnected to one another and to the internet, which makes them vulnerable to cyberattacks. Cybersecurity is then necessary in order to put measures in place and defend these cyber equipments from attacks.
